Stefanos Tsitsipas kept his fantastic form alive on Friday to reach the semifinals at the Estoril Open with a 6-7(2), 6-2, 7-6(3) win over Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena. The Greek teenager rallied from 3-0 down in the third-set tiebreaker to win the final seven points, including an amazing dive volley winner at 3-3 that seemed to add to the momentum that the rising star is carrying.
Tsitsipas, who entered 2018 with 4 ATP wins to his name, now has 14 this season, including an 9-2 record on the clay.
Tsitsipas had to work extremely hard to get past his Spanish foe. After splitting the first two sets he fell behind by a break in the third before rallying back from double-break point at 1-3. He then stormed back to take the tiebreaker after a shaky start—further proof that he is built for the pressure of top-level tennis.
Tsitsipas will face Joao Sousa in the semifinals on Saturday. The 29-year-old became the second player from Portugal to reach the semifinals of an ATP tournament on home soil with a three-set win over Kyle Edmund.
