While he’s still 18, Canadian Denis Shapovalov is making the most of his underdog status at the world’s biggest tournaments. The fiery southpaw, who will turn 19 on April 15, knocked off another Top 20 player on Monday in Miami to book his spot in the round of 16 on his debut.

Shapovalov saved seven of eight break points in the final set to notch a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Sam Querrey for his fourth career Top 20 win. The Canadian will move on to face either Borna Coric or Jack Sock in the round of 16.

Shapovalov improves to 9-5 lifetime at Masters 1000 events and 11-7 on the season. He struggled all day to make first serves but managed to save nine of twelve break points despite his 43 percent first-serve percentage.

Querrey couldn’t do much better. The American finished with a 41 percent first-serve percentage and only hit on 36 percent of his offerings in the decider.

Querrey drops to 9-7 on the season and 10-13 lifetime at Miami. He has only reached the round of 16 once in his thirteen trips to Key Biscayne.

The American was frustrated when Shapovalov took a medical timeout to get his left knee wrapped at 4-5 in the third set, but he held to level at 5-all in the next game.

Shapovalov then saved a break point to hold for 6-5 and quickly earned double match point when a fantastic first-serve return gained him the edge in the point that took him to 15-40. He clinched the victory on the next point when Querrey dumped a backhand into the net.

Kyrgios Cruises

Nick Kyrgios reached the round of 16 in Miami by rolling past Fabio Fognini, 6-3, 6-3. The Aussie needed just 66 minutes to stop Fognini in a battle of two players that reached the semifinal in Miami last year. Kyrgios will face either Alexander Zverev or David Ferrer in the round of 16.

Pablo Carreno Busta advanced by defeating American Steve Johnson, 6-4, 6-4, while Fernando Verdasco outlasted Thanasi Kokkinakis in a dramatic affair, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4).

Verdasco and Kokkinakis has words after the Spaniard complained that someone from Kokkinakis’ camp was talking to him between first and second serves. That person was revealed to be Kokkinakis’ father, but it wasn’t clear what exactly was said.
