Kei Nishikori has pulled out of the Australian Open due to injury. The current World No.22 ended his 2017 campaign with an injury to his right wrist and elected not to have surgery. His agent, Olivier van Lindonk of IMG, said the following in a statement:

Kei’s progress is going really well. He is continuing to improve every week (as the medical team predicted) and we are happy with the progress. Last week was the best week so far and he practiced twice a day, 4 days in a row. The team carefully evaluated Kei coming back in Melbourne. However, coming back in a best of 5 set-match situation just doesn’t seem to make sense at this stage in his comeback. So at this point we have decided to pull out of the Australia Open.

Nishikori released the following statement on his official app.

“I am very sorry to announce that I will miss the Aussie Open this year. The Aussie Open is my favorite Slam...it’s my “home” Slam…it’s the Slam that takes incredible care of the players and their teams....and it hurts that I will have to miss it this year. My rehab is going well but I am just not ready 100% to come back yet in best of 5 set matches. I wish Craig and the entire team in Melbourne a fantastic event and I look forward to seeing them all in 2019.”

Nishikori revealed a plan to play back-to-back challenger events in the U.S. before returning to ATP World Tour action. He will play Newport Beach and Dallas, starting on the week of January 22. He is slated to play the New York Open on February 12 and then Acapulco on Feb 26.
