Dominic Thiem remained undefeated at the Argentina Open by edging hometown favorite Guido Pella in two tight sets on Friday in Buenos Aires.

Dominic Thiem remained undefeated at the Argentina Open with a 7-6(7), 6-4 win over Guido Pella on Friday to set up a semifinal with Gael Monfils. The 2016 champion had to save two set points in the first-set breaker but was eventually able to get past the 27-year-old in one hour and 48 minutes to book his 16th career clay-court semifinal.

Thiem improves to 2-2 against Pella lifetime, and he has won all five sets he has played against him this season after defeating him in straight sets at the Australian Open.

The Austrian will face Gael Monfils in semifinal action on Saturday. Monfils got past Leonardo Mayer, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Thiem owns a 3-0 lifetime edge over the Frenchman, including a three-set win on clay in Umag in 2015.


Federico Delbonis will face Aljaz Bedene in the bottom half semifinal. The Argentinean is bidding for his 100th career win and has taken the only previous meeting with Bedene.
