Maria Sharapova battled past Magda Linette to reach her first quarterfinal since Stuttgart on Thursday at the Tianjin Open.

Maria Sharapova booked a quarterfinal slot at the Tianjin Open with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Poland’s Magda Linette. The Russian saved 9 of 10 break points in the match, including all five she saved in a tight first set.

Sharapova broke twice on three opportunities to improve to 13-5 on the season. She notched a break in the 12th game of the opening set and broke twice in set two after surrendering the early break.


Sharapova will face qualifier Stefanie Voegele next in Tianjin. Voegele upset No.5-seeded Yulia Putintseva on Thursday.

No.3-seeded Peng Shuai (d. Xiyu Wang), Christina McHale (d. Sakkari), Sara Sorribes Tormo (d. Yafan Wang), Sara Errani (d. Haddad Maia), Lin Zhu (d. Hsiegh) and Aryna Sabalenko (d. Duan) all reached the quarterfinals on Thursday.
