Grand Slam champions were booted out of Beijing today.

World No. 1 GarbiƱe Muguruza was trailing Barbora Strycova, 6-1, 2-0, when she retired due to a virus.

Strycova broke to open then backed up the break before a lethargic Muguruza won her only game of the match. Strycova ran off six straight games before the weakened Wimbledon champion retired.

“It’s very tough because today is the first day that I came to play,” Muguruza told the China Open website. “Since I’m in Beijing, I didn’t play at all.

“I got a virus in Wuhan. It’s good that I could play on Monday, I had more days to rest. But in fact I couldn’t perform today.”

Muguruza reached the Wuhan quarterfinals last week, falling to French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Strycova advanced to a second-round meeting with Julia Goerges, who swept American qualifier Madison Brengle, 6-4, 6-3.

In an all-American first-round clash, qualifier Christina McHale gave Sloane Stephens a shellacking, 6-3, 6-0.

“Just a tough day,” Stephens said. “There's not much to say about it. Obviously not a great match. So just forget about it and move on, try to have a better level for the next tournament.”

It was McHale's second win over Stephens in as many meetings. McHale, who won two rounds in qualifying, takes on Sorana Cirstea in round two. The Romanian defeated Mona Barthel, 7-6 (4), 6-1.

Since winning her first Grand Slam title at last month’s US Open, Stephens has failed to win a set losing her Wuhan and Beijing openers.

US Open semifinalist CoCo Vandeweghe swept Donna Vekic, 6-2, 6-2. The 14th-seeded Vandeweghe powered into a second-round match with Daria Gavrilova, a 7-5, 7-5, victor over Anett Kontaveit.

China's Peng Shuai fought off Shelby Rogers, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-5, advancing to a second-round encounter with Monica Niculescu, who sent sixth-seeded Johanna Konta packing yesterday, 6-1, 6-2.

Since her run to the Wimbledon semifinals, Konta has lost her opening match in five of her last six tournaments, including the US Open, Tokyo, Wuhan and Beijing.
