Juan Martin del Potro notched his fourth Top 10 win of the season with a 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 victory over Alexander Zverev at the Shanghai Rolex Masters, placing him in the quarterfinals where he’ll meet either John Isner or Viktor Troicki.
No.16-seeded Del Potro is a former runner-up (2013) at Shanghai. He improved to 4-13 against the Top 10 in 2017.
Del Potro took the second set tiebreaker and then broke Zverev in the fifth game of the deciding set. The 29-year-old won 49 of 55 first-serve points.
Grigor Dimitrov also advanced on Thursday in Shanghai, with a 6-3, 7-6(3) victory over Sam Querrey. Querrey entered the week 165 points behind Pablo Carreno Busta in the Race to London standings.
Carreno Busta lost to Albert Ramos-Vinolas in second-round action at Shanghai.
Dimitrov won his 40th match of the season and will face the winner of tonight’s battle between Rafael Nadal and Fabio Fognini.
