Juan Martin del Potro kept his hopes of reaching the ATP World Tour Finals alive while Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Kevin Anderson dropped out of the race on Wednesday at the Rolex Paris Masters.

Del Potro, who needs to reach at least the semifinals to qualify for London, eased past Joao Sousa, 6-2, 6-2.

Anderson was knocked off by an inspired Fernando Verdasco, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, while Tsonga dropped a close encounter to compatriot Julien Benneteau, 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-2.

There are others still in the hunt to London, but they’ll need more than just the semis.


Lucas Pouille, who defeated Feliciano Lopez, 6-3, 6-4, needs to reach at least the final.

Roberto Bautista Agut, Jack Sock and John Isner all need to win the title to h have a shot. They were all winners on Day 3 in Paris. Isner took out Diego Schwartzman in three hotly contested sets, 7-6(2), 6-7(11), 6-3. Sock battled back from the brink to defeat Kyle Edmund, 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), while Bautista Agut hammered Jeremy Chardy, 6-4, 6-1.

David Goffin, currently in seventh in the race, also bolstered his chances with a three-set win over Adrian Mannarino. The Belgian can ensure qualification by defeating Benneteau in the round of 16.
