Venus Williams just keeps turning back that clock, and racking up significant wins as she does. And Wednesday night was no different in Miami as the 36-year-old Williams notched her 14th career victory over a reigning World No.1 and booked her spot in the Miami Open semifinals for the eighth time.

“It's an amazing feeling to be better than the World No.1,” Williams said in an on-court interview after the match.

Williams’ 7-5, 6-3 victory over Angelique Kerber sets up a semifinal clash with Great Britain’s Johanna Konta. The 25-year-old No.10 seed took out Simona Halep in three sets earlier in the day.

Williams becomes the oldest player to defeat a reigning World No.1 in WTA history, surpassing a record previously set by Martina Navratilova, who defeated then No.1 Monica Seles in Paris in 1993 at 36 years and 10 months.

She was tested early by Kerber, who had defeated her in four of their previous five meetings including the Wimbledon semifinals last year, but Williams had a handle on things for much of the match despite only making 45 percent of her first serves.

Williams broke serve five times on 13 opportunities.

“She was really aggressive from the beginning and was hitting the balls really hard,” Kerber said. “I think I didn't move too well today, and made a lot of mistakes, which isn't normal for my game. It wasn't my best game, but she deserved to win because she played really well tonight.”
