Daniil Medvedev beat fellow 21-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis, 6-3, 7-6(3) to reach the quarterfinals at the Ricoh Open on Thursday. Medvedev is eighth in the Emirates ATP Race to Milan, one spot below the cut-off for the inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals in November.

“Thanasi always plays well, but unfortunately he had something with his wrist today,” Medvedev told ATPWorldTour.com. “The second set was tight, so I am happy to get through a match like this.”

It is the Russians fourth trip to an ATP quarterfinal this year, but his first since February.

The Russian will square off with Ivo Karlovic in Friday’s quarterfinals. The Croatian powered past Stefan Kozlov, winning 28 of 31 first-serve points and firing nine aces.

Top-seeded Marin Cilic also advanced on Thursday, taking out Janko Tipsarevic, 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-4, behind 17 aces.

Cilic will face Vasek Pospisil in the quarterfinals. See the complete Ricoh Open draw here.
