Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski became the first Canadian woman to win a Grand Slam title by partnering with India’s Rohan Bopanna to take the mixed title on Thursday in Paris.

The Ottawa native and her partner Bopanna battled past Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Robert Farah 2-6, 6-2 (12-10), saving two championship points in the process. The Indo-Canadian duo recovered from 7-9 down in the deciding match tiebreak.

"I think we didn't start off great today," Bopanna said, "but we kept pushing, kept working hard together, and we finally got through... For me, it was always a personal goal to win a Slam. And it's still sinking in, to be honest."

Bopanna becomes India’s fourth Grand Slam champion. In 2010, he had made the men’s doubles final at the U.S. Open with Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-haq-Qureshi and lost to the legendary Bryan brothers - Bob and Mike. Only Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Sania Mirza have won Grand Slam trophies for India.
