Top-seeded Dominic Thiem was dispatched rather routinely by Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, 6-4, 6-4, on Thursday at the Garanti Koza Sofia Open.

It was the 24-year-old Basilashvili’s best win and his second Top 10 victory in three tries for his career.

He broke Thiem for 4-3 in the opener and held serve the rest of the way, and in the second set after moving ahead by a break early, he saved three break points in the final game, finally converting on his fourth match point to secure the upset.

Basilashvili reaches his first hard court quarterfinal and will face No.8-seeded Martin Klizan next.

The big story for the home fans took place later, as Grigor Dimitrov battled bast Jerzy Janowicz in three tough sets, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, to book a quarterfinal with Viktor Troicki.

Dimitrov had to save five break points in the final two sets to keep Janowicz at bay, and he finally broke through in a very tight decider with a break for 6-5. He served out the match in the next game much to the delight of the packed house that cheered him on.

In other action on Thursday in Sofia, Gilles Muller defeated Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets, while Steve Darcis defeated Andreas Seppi, 6-3, 7-5.
