The Canadian hammered 12 aces and won 33 of 37 first-serve points to keep the gritty Coric at bay. The top-seeded World No.4 was pushed by Coric and eventually needed a second-set tiebreaker to close the door on his 20-year-old foe.
In the first night match on the main stadium, third-seeded Jack Sock worked past Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 6-4, 6-1, to set up an all-American quarterfinal with No.5 seed Steve Johnson.
Johnson got past Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka by the same 6-4, 6-1 score.
In the day’s other singles match, Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund got past Yen-Hsun Lu, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Seventh-seeded Juan Martin del Potro will be in action on Thursday, taking on Bosnia’s Damir Dzumhur.
