Kvitova’s injury is not life-threatening.
The left-handed Kvitova called her hand injury “severe” and said it occurred while she was trying to defend herself from the intruder.
“In my attempt to defend myself, I was badly injured on my left hand,” Kvitova said in a Twitter post. “The injury is severe and I will need to see specialists, but if you know anything about me I am strong and I will fight this. Thank you all again for your love and support.”
The attack occurred in Kvitova’s hometown of Prostejov.
The attacker confronted Kvitova during an attempted burglary, police spokesman Frantisek Korinek told the Associated Press.
The intruder, identified by police as a 35-year-old man, escaped and is still at large. Police told the AP they have launched a manhunt for the attacker.
An updated report on the two-time Wimbledon champion’s injuries is expected to be released later today.
Kvitova had already withdrawn from next month’s Hopman Cup in Perth while recovering from a foot injury.
