Two former Wimbledon semifinalists now find themselves facing each other with the winner moving into the final four once again.

Wimbledon: Cibulkova Wins Three Set Thriller Over Radwanska

No. 4 seed Angelique Kerber and No. 5 seed Simona Halep each found themselves not talked about much in the early stages of the tournament despite their impressive resumes. Now each has lived up to their top seedings and are being touted as contenders for the title.

Kerber wasted no time being the first player to reach the ladies’ quarterfinals on Monday. The Australian Open champion squared off against Japan’s Misaki Doi.

Ironically, it was Doi who held a match point against Kerber in the first round in Melbourne before the German won the match en route to winning the title.

Kerber didn’t let Doi enjoy a similar opportunity as she earned an easy 6-3, 6-1 win.

“It was not so easy the first few games because, of course, I have it in my mind it will be a tough match,” Kerber said. “I was match point down in the first round in Melbourne. But that's why I'm really happy that I manage to win in two sets this time.”

A tougher match ensued for Halep who took on No. 9 seed Madison Keys. The big-hitting American looked ready to perhaps pull of the upset out on Court No. 1.

Keys edged past Halep in the first set tiebreak 7-6(5). Halep didn’t let that stop her from eventually taking the second set and going up an early break in the final set.

Halep’s cause was aided later in the set when Keys started cramping and had trouble moving for shots. Halep eventually closed out the 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 win.

“It was a tough one,” Halep said about the match later. “She hits the ball with a lot of power and the serve is huge. So I just try to make my game, my plan that I had before the match. I think it was really good and the most important thing was that I stayed there and I was fighting.”

Halep enters the quarterfinal with a three to one edge in the head to head over Kerber.

Two Surprise Quarterfinalists

Two women find themselves in the Wimbledon quarterfinalis for the first time in their careers.

It was a career best performance for Russia’s Elena Vesnina who faced fellow Russian and doubles teammate Ekaterina Makarova in their fourth round match.

This one went down to the wire after both women split the first two sets. Yet, it was Vesnina who survived a final set that went into extra games before closing out the 5-7, 6-1, 9-7 win.

This is Vesnina’s first ever major quarterfinal appearance in her career.

Yaroslava Shvedova also made her first ever elite eight at Wimbledon.

Shvedova upset No. 28 seed Lucie Safarova 6-2, 6-4. It’s the third career major quarterfinal for the Kazakhstan player who will next face No. 8 seed Venus Williams.
