The first week of the Madrid Masters is in the books, and Monday commences round of 16 action on the women’s side, along with the remainder of the third round (top half) on the men’s.
Let’s get caught up on some of the more notable numbers in play this week in the Spanish capital, shall we?
15 – The length of Danielle Collins' winning streak after her second-round victory over Spain’s Jaqueline Cristian. According to Opta Sports, Collins is the fourth player in WTA history to record a winning streak of 15 or more matches beyond the age of 30.
477 – A nod to Rafael Nadal, who put two wins in the books this week to take his lifetime career record on clay to 477-76. The five-time Madrid champion will face Argentina’s Pedro Cachin in third-round action on Monday.
0-11 – American Tommy Paul dropped to 0-11 against Top-30 players on clay in his career after losing to Francisco Cerundolo on Sunday in Madrid.
14 – Elena Rybakina stretched her current clay-court winning streak to 14 with her straight-sets victory over Mayar Sherif on Sunday in Madrid. The World No.4 is also the only player to have earned wins over both World No.1 Iga Swiatek and World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka in 2024.
2 – American Coco Gauff will climb to a career-high No.2 in the WTA rankings after Madrid unless Sabalenka reaches the final this week.
13 – Carlos Alcaraz is riding a 13-match winning streak in Madrid after rolling past Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild on Sunday, 6-3, 6-3. The Spaniard has won all 23 clay court matches he has played on Spanish soil dating back to the start of 2022.
Only five-time champion Rafael Nadal (14) has won more matches consecutively at Madrid.
16 – The age of Mirra Andreeva, the youngest player remaining in singles action at Madrid. The Russian, who reached the round of 16 as a 15-year-old wild card in 2023, is into the fourth-round again – she defeated Marketa Vondrousova for her second Top-10 win of her career.
Andreeva will turn 17 on Monday April 29 – they grow up so fast, don’t they?
6 – The length of Jan-Lennard Struff’s current winning streak. The 34-year-old German, who won the title in Munich last week, topped No.14-ranked Ugo Humbert on Sunday.
3 – Alcaraz is bidding to become the first player to ever complete a Madrid three-peat this year, while Sabalenka is bidding to become just the second woman to win three titles overall at Madrid (a feat also achieved by Petra Kvitova).
