Sharapova Shades Wozniacki

Maria Sharapova’s return of serve is menacing.

Sharapova’s snark is stinging.

Asked her reaction to rival Caroline Wozniacki’s complaint that the US Open is showing favoritism scheduling Sharapova on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Russian sent a snide return right back at second-round casualty Wozniacki.

“With regards to scheduling, as you know, I don't make the schedule,” Sharapova said. “I'm a pretty big competitor. If you put me out in the parking lot of Queens in New York City, I'm happy to play there. That's not what matters to me. All that matters to me is I'm in the fourth round.

“Yeah, I'm not sure where she is.”

Two-time US Open finalist Wozniacki questioned the schedule following her three-set loss to Ekaterina Makarova on Court No. 17. Tournament organizers were forced to cram high seeds on outer courts due to the rain that washed out much of the schedule on Tuesday.

“Putting out a schedule where the No.5 in the world is playing on court 5, fifth match on, after 11, I think that’s unacceptable,” Wozniacki said.

The former No. 1, who owns US Open wins over Sharapova in 2010 and 2014, questioned the tournament placing a player returning from a 15-month doping suspension on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“Someone who comes back from a drug sentence, performance enhancing drugs, and all of a sudden gets to play every single match on Center Court, I think that’s a questionable thing to do. I think it doesn’t set a good example,” Wozniacki said.
