Borna Coric will undergo surgery on his right knee and could miss the remainder of the 2016 season. The 19-year-old is holding out hope when it comes to joining his mates for this year’s Davis Cup final, which is to be held November 25-27 in Zagreb, Croatia.

Pliskova: Fed Cup Final Neutral Site is Stupid Idea

Coric, who injured the knee at Cincinnati and had to retire from his first ever Masters 1000 quarterfinal, battled through the pain at the Davis Cup semifinals, eventually losing to Richard Gasquet in straight sets.

Despite that loss, Coric has played a prominent role in Croatia’s run to the final. He won deciding rubbers against Belgium in March and against the United States in July.

Coric, who emerged to win 26 tour-level matches as an 18-year-old in 2015, has had trouble living up to the expectations in 2016. After cracking the Top 40 last season he has been unable to climb any higher. But he did reach his first two ATP finals this season, at Chennai in January and Marrakech in April.

Croatia’s Davis Cup captain Zeljko Krajan is taking a wait and see approach when it comes to filling out his roster. But it has been announced that 37-year-old Ivo Karlovic will join the team for the final.

"It is hard to predict the whole rehabilitation process after the operation... I certainly have not ruled him out," coach Zeljko Krajan told AFP. "I will have more information and Coric's situation will be clearer within a month.”
