#TBT: Troicki’s Epic Rome Rant
It was only two years ago, but
Viktor Troicki
’s epic Rome rant feels like a lifetime ago (that happens when you watch 10 hours of tennis a day—even Madrid seems like quite some time ago, and remember Indian Wells?).
More:
Federer's Ridiculous Get
Regardless of how long ago it was, one can certainly make the argument that this four-minute episode by Troicki might have been the most entertaining, most hilarious meltdown in the history of tennis. If there ever was an INSTANT CLASSIC rant, this one was it.
Part meltdown, part stand-up comedy, this absurd Monty Pythonesque gem provided the perfect antidote for what was up until then a boring match in a mostly empty stadium. Did we know Troicki had it in him? Well, we knew he was a funny guy that liked to pal around with Novak Djokovic and do Shakira parodies, but this was one of those random spontaneous combustions that nobody could have expected.
At first the crowd (what little of it there was) was stunned, but when Troicki gestures to space with outstretched arms and yells “From space you can see it!” everybody in attendance bursts in to laughter. He received a round of applause for that, and an even louder ovation at the 2:44 mark when he says “Give me the camera” and walks over with the cameraman to film the mark in question.
Who even cares if it was in our it was out (we think it was in, for the record—There truly was no space)? What else can you say? This was true comedic genius from Troicki. It’s difficult to imagine a four-minute rant ever being funnier. We’d love to see it is ever matched, and we wholeheartedly encourage challengers to try (calling Ernests Gulbis, who was an innocent bystander in this scene), but we’re skeptical that it will ever be topped.
In other words, we’ll see you next year, for #TBT, during Rome.
