Del Potro: What the World Needs...

Juan Martin del Potro knows how to fulfill dreams.

Del Potro and teammate Federico Delbonis scored singles victories on the final day of the 2016 Davis Cup final to lift Argentina to a pulsating 3-2 victory over host Croatia and its first Davis Cup championship.

Federer: Novak Needs Time

Now, del Potro dreams of seeing the soccer world achieve a need—for iconic Argentine star Lionel Messi to lead the nation to the World Cup this summer in Russia.

"I think Argentina and everybody wants to see Messi with the World Cup, no?" del Potro told the media in Indian Wells. "The soccer world needs Messi with that trophy. And, in my country, we have very high expectation in Russia. And I know the players feels that pressure, because I feel when I was playing Davis Cup. It was similar.

In its fifth Davis Cup final, Argentina—a nation that gave the game Guillermo Vilas, Jose-Luis Clerc, David Nalbandian, Guillermo Coria, Gaston Gaudio—finally realized its Davis Cup dream with a spirited revival.

While the 2009 US Open champion suggests his Davis Cup days are likely done, he's hopine Messi will achieve his own sporting dream.

"But Lio is a great guy and he deserve to win, but he's doing more than he can for our country, and I'm very proud to have Messi with the Argentinian flags around the world," del Potro said. "And hopefully Argentina can win the World Cup."
