Taylor Fritz has hit the shot of Wimbledon! (for now)
The 11th-seeded American pulled off this gorgeous head-first dive to lock down the second set against British wild card Alastair Gray.
How good was it? Gray believed he had won the point until he turned around to look and see what all the crowd noise was about.
“It was a huge point,” Fritz would later say. “I hit the passing shot and saw that he was there, saw kind of where it came off his racquet, saw that it was going to bounce a bit because he hit it from so high up. I was like ‘I think I have the reach if I just fully dive I’m a pretty long guy,' I just dove at it and tried to get the racquet on the strings.
“All I had to do was just hit it and get it over the net – pretty crazy.”
Fritz finished off the victory. 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-3 in two hours and four minutes to set a third-round clash with Slovakia’s Alex Molcan.
Molcan, who is now coached by Maria Vajda, the former coach of Novak Djokovic, defeated American Marcos Giron, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, to reach the third round on his Wimbledon debut.
