Cold Kiss but a Warmer Stance for Cornet, Garcia


Alizé Cornet categorized her exchange at the net with Caroline Garcia after the pair’s round of 16 battle on Monday in Paris as “cold.” But there appears to be hope that the worst is behind the feuding Frenchwomen.

For the sake of the French hopes at next year’s Fed Cup, it would be nice. There has been an icy tone between Garcia and her compatriots after Garcia ended her doubles partnership with Kristina Mladenovic in March and then pulled out of France’s Fed Cup World Group Playoff vs. Spain due to a back injury.

At the time of the announcement by Garcia, Cornet, Mladenovic and Pauline Parmentier, all skeptical about the nature of Garcia's injury, tweeted the same thing: “LOL,” within a three-minute span.

Since then Mladenovic has made it a point to go after Garcia, and she recently explained that she was shocked that Garcia ended their doubles partnership via text message.

After falling to Garcia in straight sets on Monday, Cornet had the following to say about what was perceived to be a warm embrace at net at the conclusion of the match.

“Warm? It was probably the coldest kiss I had in my life—but it was a kiss.”

She elaborated: "I was surprised. I was not expecting that she would want to give me a kiss, and I liked it. It was good to finish on this note. I wouldn’t have liked just a handshake, like very cold. I’m not this kind of person. I’m a very nice person. I don’t like the conflict, so I told her good luck, and I mean it.”

Perhaps Cornet can bring about a thaw that leads to better relations between these three talented compatriots. “We have to be over this,” Cornet said, adding: “And Caroline, I feel this whole story is touching her a lot. I have nothing against her, nothing at all. I like this girl a lot, actually.”
