Second Serve

Each day at Wimbledon we’ll bring you some numbers to help you make sense of the chaos. Here’s the first installment:

772 The ranking of Great Britian’s Marcus Willis this Monday. Willis shocked the grounds by taking out Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis, who ranks 719 spots higher than the Brit at 54 in the world. What’s in a ranking anyway?

71 Number of Grand Slams that Venus Williams has now played, tying American Amy Frazier for the all-time record. Williams advanced in straight-sets past Donna Vekic on Day 1

142 The speed of Day 1’s fastest serve, hit by Australia’s Sam Groth in his straight-sets loss to Kei Nishikori. On the ladies side Sabine Lisicki topped the competition with a 122 MPH serve.

17 The highest seed to lose on Day 1. Gael Monfils fell to compatriot Jeremy Chardy in five sets. No.23 Ana Ivanovic was the highest seed to fall on the women’s side. Five seeds fell in total—three on the men’s side and two on the ladies side.

80 Roger Federer won his 80th career Wimbledon match, against just 10 losses. Venus Williams wasn’t impressed. She won her 90th match at Wimbledon, against 13 losses. 16 Number of matches (out of 63) that went the distance on Day 1. The men played eight five-setters while the women played eight three-setters.

11 Highest number of double faults on Day 1. Ernests Gulbis, Marcus Willis and Denis Kudla tied for the lead. Of those three players, only Willis was able to overcome the double-faults and win.
