Petition To Permit Djokovic to Play US Open

By Richard Pagliaro | Wednesday, July 20, 2022

Novak Djokovic has thousands of committed allies supporting his hopes of playing next month's US Open—his fans.

A petition started by Padma Rajan on Change.org to let Djokovic play the 2022 US Open has already garnered 16,000 signatures.

The 35-year-old Serbian, who was booted out of Australia in January and denied the chance to defend his Australian Open title, remains unvaccinated and would not be allowed entry into the United States under current COVID-19 restrictions.

Hall of Famer John McEnroe says politics and sports shouldn't mix and authorities should let Djokovic play the US Open.

“These politicians are getting in the way too much,” McEnroe said during ESPN's Wimbledon final broadcast. “They did it in Australia. Let’s let the guy come in and play in the U.S. I mean, come on. This is ridiculous."

Of course, critics opposing an unvaccinated Djokovic being permitted to play Flushing Meadows point to a double standard. At the Australian Open last January, every other singles player in the field was vaccinated so why should a Grand Slam tournament permit a double standard?

Where do you stand on Novak Djokovic being permitted to play the US Open? Do you support or oppose Djokovic playing? Or do you believe the 21-time Grand Slam champion must be vaccinated to play the US Open?
