The WTA is going to play on hard courts in bluegrass country. The tour announced that it would be holding the Top Seed Open presented by Bluegrass Orthopaedics in Lexington, Kentucky, (August 10-16) marking the first WTA tournament to be held in the state.
The announcement was made in joint with the Citi Open which said it could not come to terms with the WTA on keeping women’s tennis at its event in Washington, DC.
The Citi Open says it will look forward to holding the WTA portion of its tournament back in Washington, D.C. in 2021. The tournament cited “unique circumstances and requirements” caused by the coronavirus and said that they understand and support the decision of Octagon and the WTA to hold their event at a separate site.
The WTA also added Prague in the same week to the 2020 Calendar (August 10-16.
Prague was originally scheduled for May this year.
The WTA also announced that it plans to adopt the same rankings modifications as the ones initiated by the ATP earlier this week.
“Under the revised system, a player’s ranking will be comprised of her best 16 results in singles and best 11 results in doubles based on the points earned between March 2019 through December 2020,” the tour said in a statement. “A player’s ranking breakdown will include the "Better of 2019 and 2020" points earned at Tour-level and Grand Slam events.”
