Spain’s Paula Badosa is the first official positive test among the players at the Australian Open quarantine, after the 23-year-old World No.67 revealed the news on Thursday on social media.

Badosa was one of the 72 players placed in hard quarantine upon arrival in Melbourne. She flew from Abu Dhabi on Ehithad Airways 8004, along with other players such as Angelique Keber, Bianca Andreescu, Ons Jabeur, Belinda Bencic and Marta Kostyuk.

“Today I received a positive Covid-19 test result,” said Badosa on Twitter. “I’m feeling unwell and have some symptoms, but I’ll try to recover as soon as possible, listening to the doctors. I’ve been taken to a health hotel to self isolate and be monitored.”

Badosa’s positive test shows the wisdom of the Australian Open’s strict stance on coronavirus protocols. Rumors have circled that the government might loosen restrictions on the hard quarantine in the second week, but that seems unlikely now.
