One of the biggest breakthrough stars of the 2019 Grand Slam season will have to miss the first major of 2020. 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu announced on Saturday that she’ll miss the Australian Open due to the fact that her left knee is still not completely healed.

“My rehab is going well, I feel better and stronger every day but after discussing it with my team and following the recommendation of the doctors, the Australian Open is unfortunately too soon in my rehab process and I sadly will not be able to play in it this year,” she wrote on Instagram.

Andreescu injured the knee at last year’s WTA Finals in October, where she was making her debut. The current World No.6 was also plagued by injuries in 2019. She most most of four months from April to August due to a shoulder injury.

“It was a very tough decision to make as I love to play in Melbourne but I have to respect the recuperation plan for my knee and body,” she wrote.
