Alexander Zverev and Roger Federer showed their skills as athletes and audience members.

The 19-year-old Zverev enthusiastically battled Federer on the baseline and the bongos and enjoyed both experiences.

Roddick: Federer Third Favorite At Slams

Zverev edged the 17-time Grand Slam champion, 7-6 (1), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4) in a two-and-a-half hour duel to stake Germany to a 1-0 lead over Switzerland at the Hopman Cup in Perth.

"Against Roger you know you have to play every single point or you have no chance,” said Zverev, who defeated Federer, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-3, in advancing to the Halle final last June. “You have to play it at a very high level otherwise he will beat you quite easily. “It has always been like that and always will be until he stops playing.”

During the second set of Belinda Bencic's 6-3, 6-4 win over Germany's Andrea Petkovic, Federer and Zverev staged a bongo battle on the big screen as fans roared.

Federer and the 19-year-old Bencic beat Zverev and Petkovic, 4-1, 4-1 in the decisive FAST4 mixed doubles matches to lift Switzerland to a 2-1 victory over Germany.

The Swiss can clinch a spot in Saturday's final by beating the French pair of Richard Gasquet and Kristina Mladenovic on Friday night. France swept Great Britain.
