Garbine Muguruza and Rafael Nadal celebrated their brilliant 2017 campaigns in Spain last week when they were awarded best athletes of the year 2017 at the 70th Gala of Mundo Deportivo in Barcelona.
2017 was truly a brilliant year for both, and for Spanish tennis. Last September both Nadal and Muguruza occupied the No. 1 spot, marking the first time countrymen shared that top rank since 2003. Muguruza won Wimbledon, her second major title, while Nadal won his tenth Roland Garros title and his 16th major title at the U.S. Open before finishing the season as the ATP’s year-end No.1 for the fourth time.
