Caroline Wozniacki has a big beef with the grunting of Monica Niculescu. On Thursday in Doha the Dane logged a major complaint with chair umpire Emmanuel Joseph during her 7-5, 6-1 victory over the Romanian.

“Because that’s the only way she can win, is to piss people off,” said Wozniacki, before breaking out into a comical (though not intended to be) impression of Niculescu’s grunt.

The argument happened at 4-4 in the opening set, after Wozniacki had given up a break lead and also mocked Niculescu’s grunt on the previous point.

Joseph firmly disagreed with the Dane’s accusations and play continued. After the match, Wozniacki had more harsh words for Niculescu, which were picked up and translated by Mark Nixon:

Wozniacki assured herself of maintaining the No.1 ranking with today’s victory for at least another day. But if Simona Halep outperforms Wozniacki by one round at Doha she will become No.1. Wozniacki will face either Johanna Konta or Angelique Kerber next.
