Denis Shapovalov showed true humanity (and playfulness) on Thursday at the Western and Southern Open when he invited a ball kid to have a seat next to him as rain spit down on to Court No.10. Shapovalov and Milos Raonic had just encountered a rain delay four points into their match—a match that had been delayed four hours by rain—and Shapovalov took it upon himself to show some kindness to the kid.

On the smallest showcourt in Cincinnati, with many fans already gone to look for shelter, Shapovalov wasn’t doing it for show. He’s just a genuine kid that, simply put, gets it. The ball kid enjoyed himself, they chatted, and soon after the players were whisked off to the locker room to endure another delay.

Upon resumption, Raonic took out Shapovalov, 7-6(6), 6-4, to reach the quarterfinals, but Shapovalov did well on his Cincinnati debut. He won two rounds, played some great tennis, and added to his ever growing legion of fans with this classy gesture.
