USTA: Plan To Hold US Open As Scheduled

The coronavirus has cut down Wimbledon.

The US Open plans to stick to its scheduled August start time—for now—USTA officials said.

The AELTC announced today it is cancelling Wimbledon for the first time in 75 years due to health and safety concerns over the coronavirus.

It marks the first time in 75 years The Championships will not be contested.

The ATP and WTA Tours have extend the suspension of the pro circuit through July 13th, which completely cancels the European grass-court season.

Roland Garros unilaterally shifted its scheduled May start time to September 20th—one week after the US Open ends on September 13th.

The USTA says it is aiming to hold the US Open as scheduled starting on August 24th.

"We understand the unique circumstances facing the All England Lawn and Tennis Club and the reasoning behind the decision to cancel the 2020 Wimbledon Championships," the USTA said in a statement. "At this time the USTA still plans to host the US Open as scheduled, and we continue to hone plans to stage the tournament.

"The USTA is carefully monitoring the rapidly-changing environment surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, and is preparing for all contingencies. We also rely on the USTA’s Medical Advisory Group as well as governmental and security officials to ensure that we have the broadest understanding of this fluid situation. In all instances, all decisions made by the USTA regarding the US Open will be made with the health and well-being of our players, fans, and all others involved in the tournament."
